Hamilton, the centre of the rich farming Waikato district in the North
Island is the largest inland city in New Zealand, and has a population of
over 100,000 people.
The settlement of Hamilton grew beside the Waikato River and the first
settlers had to depend only on the river for transport and communication.
Now State Highway One, which is the main highway running from the north to
the south of New Zealand, runs through the centre of Hamilton. The Hamilton
Airport connects to all popular destinations around the country and several
in Australia.
In addition to the traditional agricultural industry Hamilton is now also
known for manufacturing and retailing. Exports from the area are shipped
out through the ports of Auckland and Hamilton.
The city has grown rapidly in recent years and parks and walkways have been
developed along the banks of the river. Also overlooking the river is the
beautiful modern museum and art gallery.
The city has become increasingly well known as an educational centre with
the growth of the Waikato University situated in the city.
