New Zealand Coffee Festival Ltd

Festival Preview, Michael Guy - 28/07/06

The World’s Richest Barista Event to be held in New Zealand

Move over Black Caps, The Black Cups are here – New Zealand’s best six baristas taking on Australia’s six best baristas in Auckland to make the perfect cup of coffee with one barista taking home $7,000 in the world’s richest barista event.

The competition will see the New Zealand team, which includes a number of baristas who have competed in the World Barista Championships, first take on the Australian team at one of Australia’s biggest coffee events, Café Biz in Sydney on October 30.

The Australian team will then come to Auckland to compete in the finals against The Black Cups at the 3rd annual Wild Bean Café New Zealand Coffee Festival & Awards to be held at North Harbour Stadium from November 10-12.

The best barista wins $7,000 and there is also a prize for the winning team, says Michael Guy, the director of the New Zealand Coffee Festival.

Confirmed team members include current NZ barista champion Luciano Marcolino of Christchurch, former barista champions Carl Sara of Christchurch and Emma Markland-Webster of Nelson, plus Auckland baristas David Huang and Ben Boyle, both of whom have been highly placed in competitions. One other team member will be confirmed within the next week.

The festival, aimed at coffee lovers, café goers and coffee professionals, will feature four main events – 50 stands featuring New Zealand’s best coffee roasters and everything for the modern coffee lover and café owner, the finals of the National Barista Awards sponsored by Robert Harris which chooses a winner to compete in the World Barista Championships in Japan next year, the Trans-Tasman Barista Championships, and the judging of freshly roasted coffees for the New Zealand Coffee Awards.

More than 100 coffees from around 40 coffee companies were entered in last year’s Coffee Awards, which will again be judged this year by a team of international and local judges. Former Chairman of the World Barista Championships, Instaurator (and yes, that’s his legal name) will be Chief Judge.

Festival Director Michael Guy is available on 09 424 5282 (dial 09 from Auckland), on 027 495 8511 or at eatout@xtra.co.nz
