Three New Zealand cities host the annual Food Show in 2010 and it is better than ever

The Food Show Christchurch kicked off the 2010 Food Show calendar with a unique mix of artisan and boutique food products and international delights.

"The number of exhibitors for this year's show was nearly 100, which gave visitors a lot to feast their eyes on AND sink their teeth into." said Dona White, The Food Show's organiser.

Visitors were attracted by being able to sample and savour whatever took their fancy, all under one roof, and at special show prices! This year's Food Shows are a great way to be introduced to a lot of local and international fare in a short space of time. Some highlights included Kohu Road ice cream with its award-winning range, Aoraki Smokehouse Salmon with its smoked salmon sausages, Donovan's Chocolates and Authentic Indian curries and breads from Silk Road Foods.

Many of the business owners were on hand to talk about their products and introduce event-goers to wonderful, new products to help liven up their day-to-day cooking experiences.

Every year there are a few new products to surprise regular show-goers. This year and for the first time, you could try two intriguing products from a new exhibitor, Green and Gold Imports. You could get your hands on a Hot Irishman. Coffee that is. A new arrival, Hot Irishman smashed the Guinness World Record in 2009 for the largest Irish coffee ever made! Surf Seeds, which won the top investment on TV show, Dragon's Den, also recently introduced the healthy, yet tasty seeds to a rapturous audience at the International Food Exhibition in London.

Award-winning wines and an array of exciting beverages from across New Zealand and around the world were also on show. Visitors tasted the latest varieties, met many of the producers face-to-face, educated their palate, and got great deals of all kinds.

Interview with Wendy - a regular visitor
Wendy lives in Christchurch and has attended each Food Show since its inception. I asked her what attracted her to attend so regularly.

First she said that she and her daughter attended together and had learnt that it was wise to go at the beginning of the day before the crowds built up.

She enjoyed tasting the products, bought those that especially appealed to her and appreciated the discounted prices. She also commended the pricing system which made prices in round figures - $5.00 or $10.00 thus removing the need for giving change.

Her purchases included dips, ham, juices, Queen Anne chocolates, smoked salmon, pickles, Verkerk's Kranski sausages, and cocktail savouries named Papa Belle made of red peppers stuffed with feta cheese. Her wine purchases she left until the end of her visit so that she did not have to carry them with her.

Also on show was the expertise of celebrity chefs, whose handy cooking tips encouraged everyone to re-create their tantalizing dishes at home.

The cooking demonstration which Wendy attended was differently organised from those she went to in the past where the celebrity cook demonstrated the making of the recipes. This year Annabelle White talked and engaged in banter with members of the audience while other expert chefs did the cooking with no commentary and were shown on a large screen as they worked.

Other visitors reported watching Ray McVinnie doing the cooking himself. Al Brown in his session showed his passion for local produce. Peta Mathias took the audience on an aromatic journey with inspiration from her latest culinary escape in Marrakech, Morocco.

Many people also bought MasterChef aprons that were made available to the public for the first time at the show. MasterChef fans were particularly excited about seeing local contestants, Sue Drummond and Brett McGregor.

Wendy was pleased to buy a discounted subscription to "The Healthy Food Magazine', a publication which she has always found interesting. She especially appreciates a current series of articles on recipes for one a topic not often covered in recipe books. An added treat was the bag of goodies given to those who subscribed.

Cantabrians who missed the show will have to wait until next year for a local show, but North Islanders will still be able to enjoy this feast.

The Food Show now heads to Wellington and Auckland to wow food lovers there.
