"Peregrine Fresh Air" in Queenstown and "Cheap as Chips" in Christchurch

News from Fabel Music - 16/02/07

Peregrine Fresh Air
Saturday 3 March 2007
Peregrine Winery

Taking the stage once more as THE summer event of choice, Peregrine Fresh Air brings the best of New Zealand music to Queenstown on Saturday 3 March 2007.

While Peregrine Winery provides a backdrop of sweeping vistas, a lush, fully grassed amphitheatre and a guaranteed limited capacity, Christchurch's Fabel Music bring the cream of New Zealand's musical acts to the Central Otago region.

Peregrine Fresh Air organiser and Fabel Music Co-Director Karyn South says, "We're so pleased to be bringing another fantastic line-up to the Peregrine stage this summer. It's the only South Island appearance for most of the bands this summer and we know how much Central people like to party – we've been coming down and doing it with them all winter – and we're looking really forward to doing it outdoors and in the sunshine."

This year Shapeshifter will step up for a cranking set: taking to the Peregrine stage following the phenomenal success of their album release tour which earned them Best Live Act, Best Album and Best Single at the 2006 bNet Awards. On the heels of their sublime shows with the country's most talented orchestra players, the pioneers of live electronica grace this venue for what is sure to be a cranking full length dance show for your evening entertainment.

Kora guarantee an electric live act. Widely regarded as one of the best live bands in the country, Kora has the entire nation waiting with baited breath for the release of their first full-length album. After months of recording Kora are ready to hit the summer stage with all of their accumulated performance energy. Touted as a powerhouse of rhythm and harmony, Kora are set to ignite our country's music scene this season – be at Peregrine to see what all the hype surrounds!

epsilon blue: Described as New Zealand's most luscious dance music provider, epsilon blue has been delivering aural bliss to clubs, festivals and private parties for a number of years. As a tribute to the beautiful Peregrine site epsilon blue will make what is now a rare public appearance, and will be the debut performance of his highly anticipated next album. His mission: to provide the most flavoursome and relaxing tunes to ease you into the breathtaking surroundings.

Recloose sees internationally acclaimed US producer Matt Chicoine, aka Recloose, who relocated to the Land of the Long White Cloud seven years ago make a grand appearance. His latest album, 'Hiatus on the Horizon', is receiving rave reviews the world over. Collaborating with the best of Wellington's talent, the Recloose Live Band is a dance funk phenomenon not to be missed: featuring Recloose himself on sax and keyboards along with Lisa Tomlins (Rhombus), and a host of Wellington's finest. Recloose joins the Fresh Air 2007 line up offering a set that promises to be great for a groove, or just sitting back and enjoying a quality dose of summer sounds.

And to broaden your palette: introducing…Pig Out: Fresh new UK/NZ sensation Pig Out formed in Christchurch in March 2006. Their debut album 'Club Poems' was rated 5 out of 5 by Real Groove Magazine: "Out of nowhere, New Zealand's finest live dance-punk band have made the best techno album to come out of this country ever…" Making their debut appearance in Queenstown Pig Out is definitely something to get your ears around.

Last year the event was sold out well in advance and ticket sales this year will remain limited to ensure the crowd has space to move - so, music lovers, get in fast!

The full range of multi-award-winning Peregrine wines will be available throughout the event along with a bevy of locally brewed ales. Local cuisine will be available all day, but patrons are free to bring a picnic (no alcohol) to help sustain their energy.

Gates open for the show at 2pm, with Pig Out kicking off proceedings at 2pm on Saturday 3rd March 2007.

Sunday 4 March 2007
University of Canterbury Athletic Oval, Christchurch

The 2006 Cheap as Chips event went down in history as Christchurch's biggest modern music event in over a decade. This year the highly anticipated event is set to be another fantastic combination of great music, good people and outdoor fun. Best of all, it is STILL Cheap as Chips…

Cheap as Chips 2007 sees Fat Freddy's Drop, Shapeshifter and Kora, joined by a selection of RDU's finest, take to the stage on Sunday 4 March at the University of Canterbury Athletic Oval.

The Fat Freddy's Drop appearance at Cheap as Chips 2007 follows resounding success of last year's show when the band enjoyed playing in the late afternoon rays. This year's show is the first time the band have played in Christchurch since their last appearance at Cheap as Chips.

DJ Fitchie (aka Mu) says, " Freddy's are excited to play again at Cheap as Chips. We're locked down in the studio recording our second album so we haven't played live much this summer, just picking a few good gigs like Cheap as Chips so we're looking forward to hitting the stage."

Also taking the stage are Christchurch's hottest export, Shapeshifter. Our own live electronic maestros are currently enjoying a summer of blistering success – they won Best Live Act, Best Song and Best Album at the bNet National Music Awards 2006. They'll be dropping in to Christchurch after a phenomenal Australian tour where they've been busy taking their live blend of Jazz, Latin, Reggae, Hip Hop, Rock and Electronica onto the world stage. Their last show in Christchurch with the Christchurch Symphony sold out weeks in advance. Cheap as Chips will be the band's only Christchurch show this summer.

Also performing at this year's event are Kora. The Kiwi roots-reggae-rock group are poised to be another huge success with the release of their first album later this year. This is the first show from Kora in Christchurch for some time and gives the audience a chance to see why Kora already have a huge fan base. Their live show is electric and a must see for any Rock or Roots fan.

The main acts will be supported by a collection of RDU's fantastic show hosts to complete the day's entertainment. They are: Departure Lounge, a 12 piece band, headed by Oakley Grenell, serving up soulful grooves and vibrant instrumentation to ease you into the day. DJ Partido, from Supafly on RDU98.5FM (Sundays 7-9pm) putting the funk back into your fuel tank, DJ Messanjah, of the Dubwise show, an exponent of roots, reggae and dancehall culture (Sundays 5-7pm), Urban Notion playing the smoothest of drum'n'bass on RDU98.5FM (Fridays 9-11pm) and Dr Hitchcock from RDU's Mixtape Sessions (Thursdays 7-9pm) - electro, bootlegs, remixes, rock, pop and quirky stuff dubbed with eclectic, semi-sonic explosions.

Cheap as Chips organiser and Fabel Music Co-Director Karyn South says she is delighted to be putting on this huge event in Christchurch.

"We're really looking forward to another excellent day out at the University Oval. We have the best line-up imaginable for $25, and the perfect venue. It is a fully grassed amphitheatre with a large shaded embankment encircling the stage. Last year people had a great day out and we know the demand for tickets to this year's event is going to be even bigger. This concert is the only Christchurch concert any of these bands are playing this summer and the price of the ticket means that anyone can come".

A huge selection of food stalls with an array of items will feature at this years Cheap as Chips event. Everything from coffee and croissants, to souvlakis and spirulina will be on offer so no one goes hungry.

Tickets for the event are on sale now and of course they're still peanuts for acts of this calibre. Ticket prices are a minimal - $25 (+b.f) for adults, tickets for kids under 12 are just $10 and kids under 5 are admitted free. People are advised to get their tickets early as capacity is limited and the line-up is unmissable.

Tickets are available from outlets around Christchurch (including Cosmic Corner, Hunters and Collectors, Galaxy Records, Cheapskates, Dux de Lux, University of Canterbury Students Association and more). See for further information.

Gates open and the first support bands go on stage at 12 noon on Sunday 4 March 2007.

The University Athletic Green is serviced by Red Bus routes, the Orbiter and the MetroStar. Plenty of parking will also be available on the University site.
