The Opua House - new luxury accommodation in Opua, in New Zealand's Bay of Islands

Nineke Metz

A brand new bush hideaway has opened in Opua, in time for the summer season. The Opua House is an exclusive unspoilt, environmentally sensitive development. The three bedroom house is designed by French artist and owner Laurent X Julien and architect Richard Smart who appreciated the architectural work of Austrian artist Hundertwasser, and built by Jacques Jansen. The Opua House comes complete with earth roof, round shaped walls and beautiful colours. The residence has wrap around private decks to capture all the bush and sea views.

One of the most striking features of the house are the original paintings and colours throughout the house, giving each room an individual character.

Owner Bershka Julien is very pleased with the end result: "As travellers ourselves with a growing family we wanted a place that would suit those escaping their children or work, as well as those sharing their break with the family or entertaining the business team. Important to us has been to include the open spaces, native bush and sea views while paying attention to detail and creating a warm natural ambience."

French husband Laurent X Julien is an artist and has a keen eye for colour and design. His paintings are exhibited in The Opua House. The eco friendly side of the project is also close to Laurent's heart: "We have incorporated sustainable products in our design such as the earth roof and solar heating. We wanted to create a house which is unimposing on the outside and yet offers inside all the space and comfort of modern technology adorned with art and creative design."

The generous windows in the sun room allow for light, sun and impressive views.

Guests at The Opua House have the choice of self-catering, pre-ordering provisions or choosing a fully catered service using the talents of a first-class chef. The residence is available for rent, with a minimum of two nights stay.

There are also a range of three nights' packages available: total bliss, honeymoon, gourmet escape, totally organic, sailing escape, fishing retreat and corporate retreats. More information is available from the website

The Opua House is situated in the beautiful Bay of Islands. The exclusive private house has spectacular bush and sea views. The Opua house is located just 5 minutes from Opua with its General Store, restaurant, yacht club and Marina, or 10 minutes drive from Paihia which offers a range of cafes and restaurants, the Waitangi golf club and is the starting point for most of your aquatic activities.
