Winner of Twinings Short Film Festival Announced

Shelley Ashdown - 11/06/2010

A first-year film and television student in Christchurch has won the inaugural Twinings Short Film Festival with a charming tale about love.

Jasmine Gow, 18, shot her film, Cupid, which tells the tale about a gutsy cupid and her novel way to make couples fall in love, on her family farm in Southland during the school holidays. Her ten-year-old sister, Melinda, has the starring role with cameo appearances from her dad and two brothers.

TV3 film reviewer and judge Kate Rodger chose Cupid as the winner from the 22 films entered into the competition.

"Cupid shot a little arrow through my film reviewer's stone cold heart," Kate says. "It had a whimsical entertaining feel, and the narrative was assured and engaging. It was also a lovely use of Twinings Tea."

Kate was impressed with the number of entries. "It's so assuring to see so many budding Kiwi filmmakers out there. The Twinings Wildcard Curiosity was definitely vying for Cupid's crown, a simple premise cleverly delivered with polish and flair."

Over 4500 public votes were submitted during the competition and four finalists were selected according to the number of votes they received. A Wildcard finalist was selected by Twinings.

"We were thrilled at the quality of films entered into this competition. The skill used to create them was very impressive. We thought Jasmine's effort was outstanding as her film was warm, friendly and funny," Jessica Bailey, Marketing Manager for Twinings says.

Jasmine has won a VIP screening of her film at Rialto for her and 99 of her friends with her film being screened at the beginning of a new release. She has also won 50 Rialto tickets and a 12-month supply of Twinings.
