Society for Research on Women and New Horizons for Women Trust (Inc)

In the year 2000 I wrote an article for NZine about the work of these two organisations.

Their valuable work continues, so here is an update on their activities.

Society for Research on Women Last year’s symposium, Outside the Square, organised by the Society for Research on Women, attracted high enrolments and was rated as a very worthwhile and challenging experience by those who attended.

The result? – another seminar. Outside the Square Again, this year’s symposium, is to be held on 29 September 2001 in the Rakaia Block at the Christchurch Polytechnic.

It begins with a champagne breakfast in the Madras Cafe Bookshop, followed by a programme of keynote speaker, papers and workshops running from 9.15 am to 4 pm. For all this the cost is NZ$35.00.

Celia Lashlie has been much in the news this year because she spoke out about children growing up destined for a life of crime. She is the keynote speaker and her topic is: "Children predestined to arrive at the prison gate."

Morning papers Three concurrent sessions, each with three forty-five minutes papers, are offered on a range of topics. Participants may choose among:

Thriving in the workplace with papers on the impact on women of the new employment climate. leadership and mentoring, and the future of work.

The fence at the top of the cliff with papers on the Early Start intervention programme, women’s perspectives on community sentences, and the social implications of teenage pregnancy.

Your better bets – women’s health with papers on physical activity and health, technology and women’s bodies, and PMT and PND – psychological or hormonal?

Eight One-Hour Workshops 2.00 – 4.00 pm Again there is a wide range of choice. New Horizons for Women Trust makes additional awards The Trust continues to give awards to assist women with second-chance education and training and research on issues which affect women.

Additional awards are being funded by people who wish their grants to be administered by the Trust. In 1993 there were three awards. In 2000 there were fourteen names on the list.
