The Alan Brash Memorial Fund

In 1999 there was keen interest in three articles I wrote based on interviews with the Very Reverend Dr Alan Brash.

His work as a pioneer in the ecumenical movement and as a founding member of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) is being honoured with an appeal to mark the 50th jubilee of that organisation. CCA has established an endowment fund to provide education, peace, aid and development programmes in various countries. This appeal gives to those who want to honour Alan Brash’s life and ecumenical work an opportunity to make donations in his memory.

In December 2007 the funds raised by the appeal in New Zealand will be donated to the CCA endowment fund.

The appeal is an ecumenical initiative and Christian World Service is collecting the donations.

CCA plans to use the money collected for the Alan Brash Memorial Fund to fund

• theology scholarships for students from developing countries like Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia
• contacts between Asian theologians to produce theology relevant for the 21st century
• contacts involving theologians from diverse faith communities to work on the ethical, religious, theological and missiological implications of current issues such as ecology, global warming and genetic research.

Launching of the appeal The appeal was launched in the North Island at the parish of Mairangi and Castor Bays where Alan was involved soon after his retirement. Don Brash, Alan’s son, represented the family at this launch.

The South Island launch was at St Ninian’s parish in Christchurch where Alan was an active member during the last years of his life. Lyn Brash, Alan’s daughter, represented the family at this launch.
